Khaosan Road is Bangkok’s equivalent to London’s Earls Court or the Kings Cross district of Sydney. Khaosan Road is the focal point of a precinct where many of the Thai capital’s budget option hotels and eateries are located. The street forever immortalised in hit book and movie The Beach, is a must visit location on any Southeast Asian odyssey.

Cupboard sized rooms with shared bathroom facilities in guest houses off the main drag go for as little as 100 Baht, while for a few hundred Baht more visitors can usually find something a little more luxurious with air-conditioning. The Viengtai Hotel on the street running parallel to Khaosan is a good place to splurge.

Dining and shopping venues are some of the best in Thailand. Besides ubiquitous Thai staples such as pad Thai noodles and kow pat fried rice, gourmands can enjoy Middle Eastern falafel and speciality Indian dishes on Khaosan Road. During the evenings, vendors set up stalls selling snacks including kebab sticks and fresh fruit.

Khaosan Road shops and stalls offer a full range of hand-crafted souvenirs, silver jewellery, colourful ethnic clothing and fake designer gear. Although most of the bars and cafés on Khaosan are streetside establishments where the principal activity seems to be people watching, there are a few more genteel venues. Gulliver’s Traveler’s Tavern and The Club disco are among the more popular venues for an evening’s entertainment.

The vibrant district between Silom and Surawong roads in central Bangkok is renowned throughout the world for its exciting nightlife. Although it has mellowed over the past decade, Patpong is still a must-visit location for most Bangkok visitors. Many of the bars offer agogo entertainment with scantily clad dancers dancing around poles, but there are still a number of discos and traditional pubs to provide a modicum of variety.

Bars are focussed on what are really two lanes, Patpong 1 and Patpong 2, running between the two main roads. At the Silom end of Patpong, near Sala Daeng Skytrain Station, the Thigh Bar and O’Reilly’s Irish Pub are close geographically, yet miles apart in terms of style. The latter is an archetypal pub with draught Guinness among its offerings, while the Thigh Bar offers a central stage packed with agogo dancers.

Club Electric Blue is one of the numerous other agogo bars and is on Patpong 2. On a recent night out, the stage at this venue was full of beautiful ladies, while punters ranged from young men to middle-aged couples. Bobby’s Arms is nearby and another relaxing tavern to take in a few drinks and some traditional pub fare. Lucifer Disko is a great place for party animals and those not wishing to retire to bed early. As its name implies, the club is themed on hell, a fact evident in staff uniforms and décor. Music genres vary considerably and typically include trance and pop.

Although Bangkok’s live music venues all seem to offer bands that play covers of tracks by iconic Thai band Carabou, the Eagles or the Scorpions, there are a few establishments where highly skilled artistes perform jazz, blues, rock and traditional Isarn numbers. These busy bars and clubs are scattered around the capital.

Those with a passion for jazz, blues or reggae will discover that the Saxophone Pub & Restaurant on Phayathai Road near Victory Monument fits the bill nicely. Over its two-decade long existence the Sax has launched several local bands on the road to fame and fortune. Thai ska band T-bone are regular performers.

The Rock Pub is also on Phayathai and across from the Asia Hotel. As its name implies the venue offers bands that play rock music and variations of it such as grunge and metal. American rock icons Story of the Year are scheduled to perform at the Rock Pub on 7 October.

The Vientiane Kitchen on Sukhumvit Road’s Soi 36 offers an altogether softer genre of music. People dining on tasty northeastern (Isarn) Thai specialities are serenaded by a band that plays music from that part of the country.

The Brick Bar, near Buddy Lodge, is one of the Khaosan Road establishments which puts on live groups. The bands are mostly low-key, although occasionally a feature band might play some heavier rock numbers.

The best thing about Bangkok is that you can never be bored because it has it all! Bangkok cabaret shows are legendary because Thailand’s lady-boys (Katoeys) are some of the most beautiful and convincing transvestites in the world and also accepted and embraced by highly tolerant Thai society to an extent that some families even believe, that they bring good luck to the family.

Most of the performers have been totally transformed into when because most shows won’t even take them until the final curtain has been pulled on their manhood. Gender reassignment surgery in Thailand is also legendary it maintains outstanding surgical standards and is one of the most cost effective places in the world.

Bangkok boasts some of the most famous and fabulous lady-boy show in the world and the cabaret shows pay tribute to the crème de la crème of female persona, from Hollywood glam, disco diva to mythical creatures and legends of the orient. The cabaret shows feature spectacular extravaganza sets and costumes and to add some fun, comedy skits are thrown in to.

When it comes to the Khaosan Road experience, all you will see here is the amount of the people in the street, the noise and the traffic, it is all true but if you are around the area and you just want to eat, drink and shop, why not try Soi Rambuttri.

If you are looking for a place to have dinner, there are so many places to eat, from slightly expensive restaurants like the Sawadee inn and the English Restaurant that offers English fish and chips to the small side-street restaurants that offer Thai food from as little 25 Baht.

This soi has a few bars that you can drink from at reasonable prices if you want to be away from the tourist-heavy Khaosan road. They are so many bars that open 24 hours where you can seat and have a beer while you plan what to do next, bars and restaurants like PoPiang, Gecko Bar, Infiniti Bar and Restaurant offer that benefit and the food is so delicious. There are also so many cocktail bars along the street which you can seat and have a break, these are many along the soi and offer very cheap drinks as this is one of the cheapest areas around Banglumpu.

Again if you have just arrived in Bangkok around Khoasan area and looking for a cheap place to stay, instead of going into Khoasan itself, just come to soi Rambuttri because it offers the cheapest accommodation in the area. This is the only soi where you are going to find accommodation from as little as 150 Baht per night. For example, try the mini-house, am sure you will find it cheap though they are also a few good hotels, if you just want to stay away from the Khoasan road noise, like the Rambuttri inn which offers a full 4 star hotel service with a swimming pool at the top of the building.

And also, if you want to shop for the Thai souvenirs, this is the best place to be because they are so many local Thai shops with the basic items that tourists and visitors like to buy and at very reasonable prices. You can also plan your holiday from here to the rest of Thailand because of the many tourist agents, which offer the best prices than anywhere in Bangkok.

If you think you have done and seen all in Bangkok and haven’t been to a Thai kick boxing event, then you haven’t seen it all. If you are a martial sport enthusiast on a holiday in Bangkok, then an evening at ringside at the Muay Thai event will surprise you.

Muay Thai, is Thailand’s ancient traditional national sport and the participate start training at a very young age to master the discipline game. This is the game also known as the “science of eight limbs” as muay Thai fighters are able to strike using eight different points of contact which include the hands, shins, elbows and knees. The kick boxing practiced today slightly varies from the ancient art and the only similarities to western boxing. Is that fighters wear gloves.

Today, there are so many western fighters in this sport who come to Thailand every year to be trained and only those who can master the discipline can participate in it and it takes place in many western countries but nothing can be compared to the masters of this game as they start training at a very young age.

There are two arenas in Bangkok that serve the public’s daily need for the game and the new arena is used on the weekends and the old one is open during the week and because the tourists are reserved seats ring or mat, the tickets are a bit pricey and the tickets can be booked at any of the many tour operators in Bangkok, it will cost you 1500 baht to 2000 baht and getting there is so easy, you can take a taxi, a tuk-tuk, a motor bike taxi or if you are staying in one of the expensive accommodation settings, they will provide a car with a driver.
