With the inexorable advance of floodwaters into central Bangkok threatening to swamp the areas around my apartment building I decided it was time to get out while the going was good. At just 80kms from the Thai capital, Had Bang Saen seemed like the perfect place to head for. This sleepy seaside resort is mainly a destination for Thai tourists as most foreign visitors head for the eclectic entertainment at Pattaya farther round the Gulf of Thailand coast.

The soft sands of Bang Saen beach slope gently out to sea and are safe even for toddlers to play in. At weekends and on Thai holidays, the seas are full of Thais floating in inflated lorry tyre inner tubes or taking banana boat rides. Under beachside parasols vendors serve anything from Isarn style grilled pork and sticky rice to gourmet seafood dishes as well as the ubiquitous Thai sugar-cane whiskey and Singha beer.

There are also several restaurants open during the evening on small sois leading off Beach Road. One of Thailand’s quirkier tourist sites is located in Bang Saen and offers a respite from relaxing on the beach. Saensuk Palace is a temple with part of its compound devoted to figures and displays set up to depict hell and mortal punishments for various earthly sins.

The zoo and crocodile farm complex at Samut Prakarn offers an interesting day trip from Bangkok. It can be visited as part of a tour from Bangkok that will also typically take in nearby attractions including Taling Chan Float Market. Those wishing to get there under their own steam can take the BTS Skytrain to On Nut Station and then a local bus or taxi.

Although the principal attraction in the massive zoo and farm enclosure is crocodiles, it is not the only one as there are regular animal shows and displays as well as the opportunity of seeing creatures such as leopards and snakes. The crocodile farm’s proprietors claim there are 60,000 crocodiles housed here and these include some of the globe’s rarest species of the reptile. Crocodile shows are staged every hour. The highlight of these is a crocodile wrestling match and the keeper putting his head between a creature’s gaping jaws.

The zoo’s elephants also put on regular acrobatic shows and are rewarded by audiences with sugar cane and bananas. Pre-historic beasts are represented, albeit not live ones, in the dinosaur museum. Shaded paths meander round the farm. There are cafés onsite that serve up refreshing beverages and tasty snacks. The zoo and crocodile farm’s opening hours are from 07:00 to 18:00 daily.

I am writing about the canal boat in Bangkok because it is very interesting because not only one of the fastest ways to move about in Bangkok but also very cheap. But first, let me give a small history of the canal boats in Bangkok.

The Khlong Saen Saep is the main canal route similar to the kind of service of the river express boat and there is also a similar service operated by the long-tail boats, which is more frequent and slightly more expensive (around 5 baht to 15 baht). They may be a little bit difficult to get on and off as you have to step under a bar directly into the seat as compared to the river express boats but they are worse traveling with because of the price.

Now, let me outline the reasons why I like to travel some sometimes on the canal boats while in Bangkok. They are the quickest as there is no traffic on the canals and the Klong Saen Saep boats offer a useful service from Banglampu, a walking distance from (Khaosan Road), all the way across the city to Ramkhamhaeng University area.

Visitors and tourists will enjoy the following stops because it easy and fast to get to Tha Banglumpu/ Tha Phanfa, The Saphan Hua Chang, near Jim Thompson’s house and the MBK shopping. You will also find that getting to Tha Pratunam, off the Ratchprarop road near the world trade center very useful and Tha Asok, off Asok road Sukhumvit soi 21) and off soi Ekkamai off Sukhumvit road.

This is one of my favorite ways to get across town and quick, there isn’t enough information of this because it is mainly used by the local people but occasionally, you will find some tourists or foreign people living in Bangkok, so the next time you are in Bangkok, why not try to travel on the Canal boat because it is fast, cheap and the experience, you will take with you.

Bangkok is an amazing city where you can never have a dull moment as there are so many activities, things to see and do and one of the way one can spend a lazy afternoon is by taking Bangkok rice barge afternoon cruise which will allow you to observe Thai people on their everyday business in the “The Venice of the East”.

This is one of the most relaxing things to do in Bangkok as all you have to do is sit down, relax and sample some of Thailand’s tropical fruits and beverages, don’t forget your camera as there are so many photo opportunities as you enjoy the picturesque Thai scenery for two and half hours.

You will travel through exotic flora and pretty canal houses before joining the converted rice barge cruise on the Chao Phraya river and you will see how the rivers and canals around Bangkok serve as a natural highway for many Thai local people going on their everyday duties and still depend on it to transport their merchandise, in particular rice as the canals are linked to the rice fields.

This tour by the long-tail boat will cost you about 900baht to 1200 Baht and it can be booked through all the concierge of the major Bangkok hotels and if you are in a guesthouse, you can book it at any of the many tour operators in Bangkok.

The Bangkok Chinese community pre-dates the founding of the Thai capital and is indeed, the land where the grand palace is today, was originally a community of Chinese traders. When King Rama1 decided to establish the capital on the site of the villages of Bangkok, he asked the traders to move and they settled to the east of the new city, along the river. Today, it isn’t enough to believe that the narrow Sampaeng lane, which isn’t enough for the car was once Bangkok Chinatown’s main street.

In 1902, the foreign community who had settled on the river further east of Chinatown petitioned the king for a larger road and Yaowarat road was built as a result.

If it is your first time to come to Bangkok, despite the many things to do, make time to visit Chinatown for it is packed with street-side restaurants, market stalls, and Chinese medicine stores and is probably the concentration of gold shops in the city. It is an experience not to miss. This historic area is as old as Bangkok itself and it’s growth spawned by waves of Chinese immigrants who left the communist China and settled here to do what they do best which is trade.

Today, Bangkok’s Chinatown is a popular tourist attraction and a food haven for new generation gourmands who flock here after sunset to explore the vibrant street-side cuisine. At day time, it’s no less busy, as hordes of shoppers descend upon this one kilometer-long strip and adjacent Charoenkrung Road to get a day’s worth of staple, trade gold, or pays a visit to one of the Chinese temples.

Chinatown never runs out of sights to see, and the energy that oozes from its endless rows of wooden shop-houses is plain contagious – it will keep you wanting to come back for more. Plan your visit during major festivals, like Chinese New Year and the annual vegetarian festival in October, and you will see Bangkok Chinatown at its best.

The ancient city or Muang Boran is a great place to visit while you are in Bangkok as it is opening door to the heritage of Thai wisdom with a wide range of archicuteral symbols combined with fine art and craftsmanship, and its structural layout and natural environment, integrates harmoniously. The ancient city creates the kind of atmosphere that induces visitors to perceive and appreciate the continuity of history, cultures, religions, arts and customs of Thai people from then, till now.

A visit to the ancient city is a great experience as it is one of the best parks/ museums in the Thailand, if not the world, it is also a photographer’s paradise as there is a lot of Thai architecture in one place.

It is a great break from the busy life of Bangkok for a half a day visit and unlike some places of Thailand, there are so plentiful places for refreshments, food and toilets which are well spaced out

Getting there, you can take a taxi from any part of Bangkok and it is about 30minutes to 1 hour depending on the traffic and it shouldn’t cost you more than 200baht on a metered taxi or you find out more details from your hotel concierge and the entrance to this magnificent ancient city is 350 baht.

Many visitors to Bangkok love to get off the tourist trail and experience something more local. If you are looking for a great place to experience Bangkok like a local, then head out to Ramkhamhaeng Road where you will find a beautiful lakeside village known as Samakorn Village. The village features a man-made lake that is an attractive place to enjoy an evening stroll before settling down at one of the great lake-side restaurants.

One of the best places to eat here is Hot Chilli, a local Thai-style restaurant that boasts some fantastic live music as well as delicious Thai cuisine. You won’t find phad thai or green chicken curry on this menu, but you will find some delicious local dishes such as fish with fried garlic, and tamarind and prawn curry. Diners can sit back and relax with the great view and a nice cold beer. Although only a few foreigners know about this hidden gem, the restaurant is still very welcoming of foreigners, and there is an English menu to assist visitors who do not speak Thai.

Once you’ve finished your dinner, take a walk around this attractive little village, and perhaps stop by one of the lively bars or laid-back cafés for a late night drink. Prices at all of the establishments at Samakorn Village are much lower than in the city and main tourist areas of Bangkok. This is an ideal place to try if you’re just after something different hat is not the usual phad thai and fish cakes that can be experienced anywhere.
