Huay Kwang Market and District

The Huay Kwang District of the Thai capital is a vibrant location with great nightlife venues, food stalls, restaurants and a street market that starts after the sun sets and keeps going through most of the night. It is best accessed via the MRT underground station at Huay Kwang, which is just a 10 minute ride from both Chatuchak Park and Silom stations.

After reaching street level, Exit Three is best for the market, the plethora of neon advertising lights resembles Hong Kong rather than an outer suburb of Bangkok. The lights publicise karaoke lounges, discotheques and cosmopolitan eateries serving Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Thai gastronomy. A quick walk around the area will reveal some real bargain prices on speciality dishes.

Between MRT Huay Kwang and the market there is a little lane that leads off to the left. In the evenings an outdoor restaurant sets up shop here and serves a delectable geng mu kop (curried pork skin) on rice for 50 Baht. After dining, a walk west soon leads to the market.

Vendors along the street sell the latest clothes and fashion accessories, mobile phones and music CDs at prices much lower than the night market around Patpong and Silom Road. Snacks available on the street include grilled meatballs, squid and Thai style kebabs; papaya salad, fruit and iced drinks.
