Thailand’s cuisine has adopted and adapted a number dishes from other countries, and made their own delicious form of these dishes. One such dish is khaow man kay – the Thai form of the favourite Chinese dish Hainan chicken rice. Khaow man kay is enjoyed by everyone, and is a favourite for many foreigners in Thailand who might be struggling with the chilli overload!

You may have noticed a number of khaow man kay stalls set up along the street with their boiled chickens strung up waiting to be devoured by hungry passers-by. Some of the city’s best and most famous khaow man kay is located in Pratunam – the central shopping district of Bangkok.

There are two shops which have served absolutely sumptuous khaow many kay for decades at Pratunam, and have become affectionately known by locals as khaow man kay pratunam. To find these stores, head down Petchaburi Road past Central World Plaza. Cross the bridge and then turn right at the first corner. You’ll then come across the two stores where you will not only see their delicious chicken on display, but their full restaurants indicating just how good they really are!

To order, choose between either a plate of chicken with the rice coming separately, or, if you’re not feeling overly hungry, order a single serve which comes with rice and chicken on the same plate. You’ll soon see why the locals go crazy over this place. The chicken is moist and tender, whilst the rice is packed with flavour. If you’d like a bit of a kick, add some of their home-made chilli paste which is a delicious accompaniment to the meal.

Prices are inexpensive, and the despite the little wait for a table, the taste alone will have you coming back time and time again.
