Bangkok’s world-famous Khao San road

Described rightfully by the famous book ‘The Beach’ as “the backpacking universe’s centre,” the legendary Khao San road in Bangkok attracts huge crowds of free-spirited globetrotters who converge here to exchange travel tales, shop and prepare for their next backpacking adventures.

For over two decades now, the world-famous road has been providing the base camp for budget-minded backpackers travelling into the kingdom and other South East Asian destinations. With its extremely laid-back anything-goes ambience it’s quite unlike anywhere else in the Thai capital and, perhaps, the globe.

A subtle makeover has been experienced in recent years, an increasing development of swanky pubs, fast-food establishments and mid-range accommodation trying to improve the area’s shabby reputation.

Only slightly though – fortunately Khao San road still retains its in-your-face vitality that is entirely its own, and remains the scene for a cast of bohemian characters. At presence, so addictive is its vibe the area is also favoured among locals, particularly young art students. However, it might all wear a little thin when staying too long…
