Nana Plaza Bangkok, naughtiest nightlife spot in the city

It is easy to spend a month in Thailand without even seeing one single prostitute. However, the Thai capital represents several red light districts attracting huge crowds of international sex tourists all year-round. Obviously some of these areas also draw numerous young Thai girls trying to establish a relationship with a ‘farang’. Today, Nana Plaza has become Bangkok’s largest adult entertainment area.

It all began about 25 years ago…
It was during the early eighties when on Sukhimvit Road’s Soi 14 and 16 a number of bars were forced by the local authorities to move due to newly planned construction activities in the area. Three of these venues included the Rainbow, the Three Roses and Rosemary’s, which all relocated to Nana Plaza. At this time Nana Plaza was mainly a parking area. Since 1982 the area has transformed rapidly into a bustling central night scene neighbourhood crammed with more than 40 bars and pubs.

Today Nana Plaza is the South East Asian metropolis’ most significant and famous naughty nightlife area. Although the nightlife venues in Soi Cowboy try to compete with it, Nana Plaza remains the star attraction with regards to the city’s go-go entertainment. Throughout this red light district visitors will find the most comprehensive selection of shows and stages. Inside its go-go bars you’ll find many partly dressed girls, sensually dancing while wrapping their slim bodies around the shiny poles. The only goal of their performance is to turn on as much customers as possible and usually they’re very successful achieving this!

Nana Plaza attracts also many sex tourists looking for she-males or lady boys. However, sometimes a lady boy goes to a customer’s hotel for spending the night while he’s not aware of the lovely lady in fact being a man. You probably can imagine the tourist’s reaction when he finds it out later or should he be pretty drunk, the next morning!

Nana Plaza’s popularity seems now and than to come in waves. At a certain time you’ll experience an overcrowded scene while another time the area is nearly empty. Business during 2007 was pretty bad and it seems that 2008 isn’t going to be any better either. Most of the bars complain about 20 to 30 percent less customers than average. The actual Thai currency’s strength might be causing this as it also negatively effected Thailand tourism in general. Another reason is probably the February 11th nationwide smoking ban in the pubs and restaurants but also the lack of service staff provides along with many of the girls’ rising fees and bad attitude seems to keep many customers away.

Somebody who visits Nana Plaza for the first time will most likely experience the zone as a surrealistic world filled with a jungle of sparkling neon lights and the sound of monotone disco beats all around. The scene of preaching missionaries, continuously photo-shooting Japanese tourists, giggling lady boys, young prostitutes, and common curious visiting foreigners create an atmosphere, which is interesting to absorb while sipping a cold beer.

Go and experience Nana yourself, perhaps you’ll be shocked and amazed at the same time, one thing is sure, the experience will be uniquely different than any other you had so far in your life.
With dozens of bars, brightly flashing neon, hundreds of girls and all the sights, smells and sounds of Nana Plaza I have only scratched the surface of what Nana Plaza is. Go and see for yourself, you’ll be amazed and possibly shocked, but it will be different than any other experience of your life. Complete Bangkok hospitality guide.
